Types of HVAC Systems
There are three main types of residential HVAC systems. Some of them are specifically for air conditioning and might require a separate heating system. Others offer heating and cooling options. Package Units
Packaged units have all of the HVAC systems components in a single metal cabinet. That means the evaporator coil, compressor, and condenser are all in one place. The cabinet is placed outside of the building, and specially-made duct work carries the air through the house. Package units can be air-conditioning only or a true HVAC system that has an electric or gas furnace, as well.
Split Units
Split units separate the HVAC components into two parts. The outdoor cabinet holds the condenser and compressor, while the indoor cabinet holds the evaporator coil. These systems use duct work to move air around the house, and a line set moves cold air to the house from the HVAC unit.
Which One Is Better?
Choosing the right type of AC for your home depends on your needs, the amount of space you have, and your budget.
HVAC packaged units tend to be less efficient than split systems. They also take up less space. They are easy to install, because they are all in one cabinet. They take up a smaller amount of space, which can make them easier to service and maintain. They are also quieter, because all of the components are outside.
HVAC split systems have a much higher SEER efficiency rating than packaged units. You can customize them to fit your needs by showing individual indoor and outdoor units. If you go with a ductless mini-split system, your maintenance costs are lower.
